Upto 35% of patients will suffer a recurrence of bladder tumours after initial treatment. This may reflect the problem that not all tumours are clearly seen using standard white light during telescopic examination of the bladder (cystoscopy). Following administration of a chemical into the bladder which is taken up by cancer cells, cystoscopy using blue light can increase the pick up rate of tumours within the bladder. This photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) of bladder cancer may, therefore, lead to a fall in established rates of disease recurrence. Read more…
