Although testicular cancer is rare, it is important that any new lump or swelling within the scrotum be evaluated by a doctor. As women are advised to perform regular examination of their breasts, so similar self-examination of the scrotum is important for men because it is the patient who is most likely to identify subtle early changes.

| Most such lumps and swellings are not cancerous, nevertheless early assessment is recommended. Examination by a specialist, with or without an ultrasound scan, can very effectively make the diagnosis. |
